Gangtok - The Place To Enjoy Hospitality

Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim, one of the smallest states in India. Situated at a distance of 120Kms from Siliguri, it is the largest city in the state of Sikkim. Gangtok is the center of Sikkim tourism industry. Gangtok is a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning, with the presence of several monasteries, religious educational institutions, and centres for Tibetology.

The city resembles the Bhutanese capital. Devoid of large stores, book shops this place is an nice break away from typical city lives. Still, the city is a fascinating place to spend a few nights, the winding side alleys hide some unexpected gems, and the main street (MG Marg) is pedestrianized and a pleasant place to take a stroll. The city sleeps by 9pm mostly, except for a few pubs which are open till 11pm.

Sikkim has many restrictions on vehicle movement as it is a bordering state with Peoples Republic of China, Nepal and Bhutan.
 

Sightseeing Locations at Gangtok

  • Tsomgo Lake :
    Tsomgo Lake or Changu lake is a glacial lake bordering China in East Sikkim which is accessible from Gangtok. The lake remains frozen during. The road to Nathu La passes the lake on north side. The Chinese border crossing is only some 5 kilometers east-northeast in a straight line, but some 18 kilometers by road.
     
  • Nathu La (pass) :
    La means mountain pass in Tibetan. Nathu La is a mountain pass between India and Peopls Republic of China (Tibet). The pass, at 4,310 m above mean sea level, forms a part of an offshoot of the ancient Silk Road.
     
  • Baba Mandir :
    Major "Baba" Harbhajan Singh was an Indian army soldier who died near the Nathula Pass in eastern Sikkim, India. He is revered by soldiers of the Indian army as the "Hero of Nathula" and the army men have also built a shrine in his honour. He has been accorded the status of saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba (saintly father). Many of the faithful people, chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the Nathu La Pass and the Sino-Indian border between the state of Sikkim and Chinese occupied Tibet have come to believe his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas.
     
  • Namgyal Institute of Tibetology :
    It is a museum of Tibetology and Buddhism in Gangtok. The institute promotes Buddhist research work.
     
  • Rumtek Monastery :
    Rumtek Monastery is a Tibetan monastery located at a distance of 25 Kms from Gangtok in Indian state of Sikkim. The monastery is currently the largest in Sikkim. It is home to the community of monks and where they perform the rituals and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage. A Golden Stupa contains the relics of the 16th Karmapa. Opposite that building is a college, Karma Shri Nalanda Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies.
     
  • Enchay Monastery :
    The Enchey Monastery was established in 1909 above Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim in the Northeastern Indian state. It belongs to the Nyingma order of Vajrayana Buddhism. The monastery built around the then small hamlet of Gangtok became a religious centre. The monastery has a large collection of masks which are used for the annual ritual dances. As its name implies, monastery has a peaceful atmosphere and also maintains a good library.
     
  • Gangtok Ropeway :
    The Damodar Ropeway is a cable car in Gangtok which shuttles between Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and state secretariat. The ropeway provides a beautiful bird’s eye view of Gangtok town.
     
  • White Hall (Flower Festival) :
    The White Hall of Gangtok is a historically significant monument. It is a two storied structure with typical British architecture and was built in 1932. The structure is named after the first British political mandarin in Sikkim, J. Claude White. Flower exhibitions are organized round the year at the flower show venue near the white hall complex, Gangtok.
     
  • Ganesh Tok :
    A little distance away from Tashi View point the Ganesh Tok is another important view point. A birds view of the Gangtok town is the main attraction of this spot. Mt. Kangchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu can be seen from here.
     
  • Hanuman Tok :
    Just above Ganesh Tok at a distance of about 11 kms from Gangtok town is another important tourist destination known as Hanuman Tok.
     
  • Himalayan Zoological Park :
    The Himalayan Zoological Park is 3km from Gangtok the capital city of Sikkim. The entrance of the park is just opposite Ganesh Tok. The sprawling environs of Himalayan Zoological Park offer the visitor much more than just mere glimpses of the animals within its compound. Breathtakingly quiet and peaceful, this is the place to be if one is seeking solitude from the hustle and bustle of city life.
